The coastal area of the South Bay (Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan Beach) is believed to have been originally inhabited by the Tongva tribe of Native Americans as far back as 7,000 years ago.
The Portola expedition which took place during the mid - 18th century was the first European land exploration of what is now known as California. In 1784, the Spanish Crown deeded 75,000 acres to soldier Juan Jose Dominguez. In 1863 a Scottish immigrant named Sir Robert Burnett purchased Rancho Sausal Redondo from the Avilla family heirs then later sold to a Canadian named Daniel Freeman in 1885. Shortly after the Santa Fe Railroad built the first passenger railroad.
The city of Manhattan Beach was incorporated in 1912. Manhattan Beach’s original pier was built in 1897 and then rebuilt in 1920 with its end portion circular to reduce damage to pilings by waves. Manhattan Beach’s population boomed after World War II with many servicemen settling here with the development of the defense industry and the desirable climate.
Today Manhattan Beach is home to the film industry with the Manhattan Beach Studios, as well as many Aerospace and defense companies.

Downtown Manhattan Beach is more bustling with many stores for shopping and restaurants and bars for socializing. Downtown Manhattan where the tournaments and fairs are held. There is also a beautiful library and a lovely play area for small children here.
North Manhattan Beach is definitely quieter than downtown, it has several wonderful places to eat, workout, and get pampered. Sand Dune Park is a great place for everyone to get some exercise, there’s serious training happening on the sand dune, lighter training happening on the stairs/trails, and seriously fun play happening in the awesome kids playground. Approximately half a mile east of North Manhattan Beach you will find The Point and Manhattan Village, both have have an indoor/outdoor vibe and there are countless stores and restaurants. Just beyond the point is a Arclight Theater offering the latest films, and a bar and restaurant.

FAQs Manhattan Beach Surf Lessons

Manhattan Beach has great weathering the most consistent surf of all the South Bay beaches, delighting intermediate and advanced surfers during the bigger swells (typically in winter) and providing opportunities for all skill levels during most of the year! During the summer months when the waves come from the south Manhattan Beach can offer playful sized surf when the other beaches may be barely breaking as they are not as exposed for south swells.
